Abbey Marienmünster

The famous Benedictine Abbey of Marienmünster is a prominent example that buildings have made history. Many sacral art treasures can be admired until today. Among them are the baroque constructional systems from the years 1683 to 1685.

Manor-house Vörden

Baroque manor-house with "Mittelrisalit" (overhanging middle element), corner-pavilion, garden ground floor and vestibule with economic buildings, constructed in 1730 in the place of a former castle. The manor-house belongs to the family von Haxthausen.

Hungerberg-Chapel

In 1779 a "Heiligenhäuschen" was build at the "Hungerberg" and a procession was led there. For the purpose of forwarding information on the line Berlin-Cologne-Koblenz an optical-mechanical signal station was constructed in 1833. In 1851 this station was converted into a chapel, which was refurbished and enlarged in 1928. Today it presents itself as neo-gothic brick building with abutments. The pyramid roof with bell tower is covered with sandstone slabs. The entrance, a pointed arch, is furnished with a double-leaf iron grid. The interior is baroque. There is also a complete way of the cross with 14 stations – each founded, renewed respectively, by individuals.

Historical wind wheel

The wind wheel in the South-East of Altenbergen is one of a few preserved wind wheels (wind generator). It was build between 1908 and 1911 to ensure the town’s water supply. It was in use until 1960.After a thorough renovation and its listing as an official technical monument (“Technisches Baudenkmal”) it is functioning again since 1988 and does nowadays serve to feed the village pond in Altenbergen.

Mother of sacred Hope

In the middle of the woods close to the abbey church stands the Mother of God statue on a high quarry stone basis. On the outstanding stones stands "Siehe ich bin die Magd des Herrn!" (See I am the maiden of the Lord!). The wish of many visitors and pilgrim groups for a pilgrimage site for the worship of the Mother of God made the "Passionisten-Patres" living in the monastry of the Abbey Marienmünster arrange for the construction in the former "Mergelkuhle".
